This young company (founded in 1989) is the brainchild of winegrower Félix Callejo and is now continued by his children, Cristina, José-Felix, Beatriz and Noelia. In addition to their own wine estate, the children gained practical experience with others: Pétrus (Bordeaux), Torres (Chile), Araujo (Napa) and Cobos (Mendoza). In 2000, the step was taken to organic production.
The vineyards are located, at an average altitude of 900 meters, in the northern part of the 'DO' Ribera del Duero near a small wine village Sotillo de la Ribera. The subsoil there consists of strongly calcareous soils, pebble soils in the dry riverbeds, sandy soil and clay in the lower parts. In total, 27 vineyard plots are cultivated with a total surface area of almost 55 hectares.
The harvest takes place manually and after the sorting tables, the grapes go to the immaculate stainless steel fermentation tanks. All 'basement movements' take place under gravity, without pumps. The wines are aged partly in concrete vats and partly in wood, for which traditional 225 liter barrels are used, but also 500 liter demi muids.
Bodegas Félix Callejo scores high, there is no wine below 90 points and the top gets 95 to 99 points from the international wine writers.
